RUSMP receives prestigious THECB grant to support Dual - Credit Math Programs in the Houston area
Ten dual-credit math teachers from Houston ISD and Aldine ISD will join RUSMP, HCC, and Lone Star math faculty to explore ways to better serve students in dual-credit math courses. The program kicks off in June and will engage the group through February 2018.
This program supports the work of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) to improve course consistency and to "increase the likelihood that institutions of higher education will accept these courses in transfer and apply them to degree requirements." The program will address the following topics: necessary skills for student success in learning, how students learn mathematics, appropriate use of technology, and instructional techniques for student success. Important mathematics topics will also be explored.
There will be an evaluation and research component to assess the effectiveness of the program which will include focus group meetings, classroom observations, and analysis of student data.
Danya Corkin, Anne Papakonstantinou, and Richard Parr will facilitate the program. Adem Ekmekci will coordinate the research component.
