Newly published RUSMP research confirms the significance of Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (MKT)

An article written by Adem Ekmekci, RUSMP Director of Research and Evaluation, Danya Corkin, Assistant Professor Psychology, University of Houston-Downtown, and Weihua Fan, Associate Professor and Program Director of Measurement, Quantitative Methods and Learning Sciences, University of Houston, was recently published in The Australian Journal of Teacher Education. The article, "A multilevel analysis of the impact of teachers’ beliefs and mathematical knowledge for teaching on students’ mathematics achievement," investigated the extent to which K-8 math teachers’—who teach in high-poverty urban schools—professional background, motivational beliefs, and mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) have an impact on students’ math achievement. The findings confirmed what RUSMP has been emphasizing in its programs for teachers: Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (MKT; a.k.a., Pedagogical Content Knowledge in Mathematics).
