Mathematics students and teachers at HISD's Burrus Elementary School participated in interactive symposiums facilitated by RUSMP Director of Elementary Education, Carolyn White. During these sessions, 3rd- and 4th-grade students used manipulatives to explore open-ended problems and engaged in discussions on mathematical concepts and language.
The 80 3rd-grade students used color tiles to investigate rectangular arrays and number sentences while the 95 4th-grade students developed their geometric reasoning skills using chenille sticks. In this large-group collaborative environment, teachers gained additional insights about their students that will inform future classroom instruction.
