RUSMP’s Director of Research and Evaluation, Dr. Adem Ekmekci, authored/co-authored three papers that were presented at the 2019 Annual Meeting of American Educational Research Association (AERA), April 13-17, Toronto, Canada. The first paper (co-authored by Dr. Danya Corkin from University of Houston-Downtown) presented results from a research study funded by the Spencer Foundation (Grant # 201800021). In this study, high school students’ STEM career expectations were studied through social cognitive career theoretical lenses. The session drew a big crowd and was shared with great scholars including Jennifer Schmidt from Michigan State University and Jennifer Cromley from University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign. The second paper (co-authored by Adam Sahin from Harmony Schools) presented results from the third year of a four-year longitudinal study tracking high school students’ future STEM major plans in college. The third paper (Ekmekci co-authored with Sahin) was about development and validation of a self-reported 21st century skills instrument (21CSI). The main study results were presented this year as the results from the pilot validation phase were presented at the last year’s conference.
