Susan has been a longtime fan of the Rice University School Mathematics Project. As a participant in the RUSMP 1988 Summer Campus Program, Susan enjoyed the opportunity to learn and discuss mathematics with teachers and professors from the greater-Houston area. She returned to RUSMP in 1990 as a Master Teacher and continues to teach during the RUSMP Summer Campus Program. In order to increase teacher and student understanding and interest in mathematics, Susan develops and shares curriculum resources that incorporate the use of technology and manipulatives. As Director of Secondary Programs, she serves as a curriculum specialist, liaison for RUSMP in collaborative curricular projects, and as a Master Teacher for various departmental programs.

Susan received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Houston in 1975. She began her teaching career in Pearland Independent School District. After teaching eighth-grade mathematics in Pearland for four years, Susan moved to Sugar Land where she taught mathematics at the middle school level in Fort Bend Independent School District for the next twenty-nine years. Due to her love of learning, Susan returned to the University of Houston and earned her Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction in 1987. She also became certified in Secondary Mathematics in 1987 and as a Texas Master Mathematics Teacher for Grades 4-8 in 2003. In order to enhance her knowledge of the foundations of psychological and educational theory, statistics, and research methodology concerning mathematics education, Susan enrolled in the doctoral program at the University of Houston. After successfully defending her dissertation on “Examining the Evolution of a University Summer Campus Program for Mathematics Teachers,” Susan was awarded an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Mathematics Education) in December 2015.

Photography and travel are two of Susan’s favorite hobbies. Since her daughters and their families live outside of Texas, she gets to be a traveling grandmother who cherishes her time with family.
